City of Del Mar to cut 10 tons of CO2 with IT upgrade

Del Mar in San Diego County will cut 10 tons of CO2 emissions annually by using shared storage and server virtualization, according to an announcement by the California Energy Commission.

The project to reduce energy costs by using more efficient technologies was completed last December and funded with $25,000 from federal stimulus funds. The city’s IT department purchased a shared storage device and server virtualization software to reduce the number of servers needed to store municipal data. The new equipment will require less energy to run and cool the machines, according to the announcement.

Del Mar selected San Jose based firm Nimble Storage as the project vendor to work on the upgrade, said Commission spokesperson Kelly Kell in an email.
