Former FI$Cal CIO Barney Gomez appointed CTO at DHCS

Former FI$Cal project CIO and veteran IT staffer Barney Gomez has been appointed chief technology officer (CTO) at the Department of Health Care Services, according to an internal announcement to the department’s IT staff. Gomez, who will report directly to CIO Chris Cruz, started the new position on April 1.

“Mr. Gomez is responsible for ensuring that the IT support needs of all departmental programs are met efficiently and effectively. Under the direction of the Chief Information Officer, Mr. Gomez will oversee IT services and operational functions of five branches, two offices in the division, and multiple federated IT organizations throughout DHCS,” said the announcement.

Gomez was appointed CIO of FI$Cal in the fall of 2011 where he served until last October.

Gomez started his career in state service in 1999 at the Legislative Data Center. Among his assignments, he served as manager of operations at the California Office of Systems Integration.

More recently, Gomez worked on the CalHEERS project in his role at OSI. He has also worked in the private sector where he was a systems engineer and network manager.
