The group formed in San Jose specifically to help government navigate the onslaught of AI and generative AI technology is looking for its first executive director.

Up to this point, the GovAI Coalition has been led by San Jose CIO Khaled Tawfik, who has been serving as board chair. This new role will serve as the group's CEO and will be "responsible for advancing the strategic direction," the job posting reads.

“We are looking for an exceptional leader who can build on this momentum, expand partnerships, advance practical AI resources for government and build a sustainable organization with lasting impact, grounded in our founding principle: for government, by government,” Tawfik wrote in a LinkedIn post.

For the uninitiated, the coalition was created by the city of San Jose in 2023 as a means of giving the city and others a pipeline to share knowledge around the emerging technology. In March 2024, the coalition was made public, publishing a toolkit to help agencies begin their AI journeys responsibly. The group recently became a fiscally sponsored project of the Hopewell Fund.

“This is a unique opportunity to work closely with the GovAI Coalition Board and help shape how governments use AI to better serve the public,” the CIO continued in his post.

The job opening comes just months ahead of the GovAI Coalition Summit* in December in San Jose. That annual event gathers member organizations from around the country and world to share challenges, best practices and successes.
