Governor Signs Legislation to Expand Use of State Surplus Computers, Help Bridge Digital Divide

Governor Brown last week signed SB 493 revising the Department of General Services (DGS) policy regarding surplus state computers.  The bill allows nonprofit organizations to be offered equipment at a discount prior to selling it to the public.  Previously, DGS had to offer the first right of refusal for computers to school districts.

"The goal of SB 493 is to make use of these computers in a more productive way that serves the public, bridges the Digital Divide and protects the environment," said Senator Alex Padilla, the bill’s author.

According to the Senate floor analysis, the legislation will help bridge the Digital Divide by encouraging expanded access to state-of-the-art technologies for rural, inner-city, low-income and disabled Californians.
