Technologists are being sought for two high-level appointments in state and county government. The first is a chief technology officer appointment with the California High-Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA). The second is an emergency appointment for a CIO with Los Angeles County’s Department of Homeless Services and Housing (DHSH).
In the case of CHSRA, the CTO is appointed by the governor and would be responsible for “traditional enterprise IT systems and rail operations technology,” according to the brief job description.
CHSRA is, as the name implies, the state’s efforts to build out a high-speed rail network connecting northern and southern California. The multibillion-dollar project has seen its share of controversy, with detractors calling out both the steadily rising price tag and lack of progress.
The incumbent will be responsible for overseeing “cybersecurity, applications, databases and infrastructure while developing specialized systems for train control management, trackside signals, passenger information systems and onboard diagnostics,” the posting reads.
“The role requires integrating operational technologies with business applications, managing IT personnel and budgets, establishing partnerships with international rail technology providers and creating digital engineering standards,” the posting reads. “This executive position is critical for safely operating America's first high-speed rail system, transporting passengers at speeds up to 220 mph.“
There is no information about the salary range for this appointment in the job description.
In Los Angeles County, the Board of Supervisors recently declared a state of emergency regarding homelessness. Because of the emergency status, the window to apply for the open CIO position is small; applications opened Oct. 3 and are only being accepted until 5 p.m. Oct. 8.
As CIO, the incumbent will be responsible for the departmental IT operations and services, including long-range planning and governance. The leadership position will also work with department managers to identify areas where technology solutions could assist with the DHSH mission.
The position pays between $163,997 and $255,048 per year. More information is available in the job posting.
