How L.A. County Spent COVID Funds on Tech

Here’s a look at where the nation’s largest county by population spent some of its federal Coronavirus Relief Funds with technology and innovation companies.

A historically large local California government has spent a majority of the Coronavirus Relief Funds allocated to it by the federal CARES Act, with several millions of that going to technology companies.

Los Angeles County, the nation’s largest county by population at more than 10 million residents, received nearly $1.06 billion in Coronavirus Relief Funds (CRF) from the $2.2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act, which became law on March 27, 2020. State and local governments have until Dec. 31 to make expenditures from that funding. So far, the county has allocated nearly $907 million of what it received to 249 subrecipients, including several technology and innovation companies. In each case, it’s not clear exactly what was purchased – but these amounts could well reflect more than one project or initiative.
