Industry raises concerns over proposed elimination of CA Tech Agency

A letter sent last week by national technology trade association TechAmerica asks Gov. Jerry Brown to reconsider the portion of the proposed 2012-2013 State Budget that eliminates the California Technology Agency.

The letter, obtained by Techwire.net and dated Feb. 9, addresses the governor’s proposed budget that would eliminate and reorganize state agencies, leaving 10 agencies instead of 12. The proposed budget would also make the California Technology Agency a department under a new Government Operations Agency.

The association suggests possible negative consequences from eliminating the agency and moving the agency’s CIO position from its current cabinet status. The letter states that the CIO should remain a cabinet-level position so that the position has “a stature equal to those Cabinet-level officials that the CIO is tasked with coordinating.”

Last month in a statement, Secretary Carlos Ramos said the proposed reorganization maintains his agency’s authority and offers an opportunity for greater collaboration between agencies.

The governor’s proposed 2012-2013 budget is available online at http://www.ebudget.ca.gov. Gov. Brown’s revised budget is expected in May.
