L.A. Data Conference Features 2 Key Gov Tech Leaders

Headline speakers include Peter Loo, acting chief information officer in the Los Angeles County CIO's Office; and Soheil Katal, CIO for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Top technology leaders from two key entities in Southern California will headline this year’s “Data Con LA + imData,” a two-day in-person expo scheduled for this summer.

The event will be held live Aug. 13-14 on the campus of the University of Southern California and will also be open to virtual attendees.

Headlining speakers are:
  • From the Los Angeles County Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), Peter Loo, chief deputy CIO and acting CIO. Loo is a veteran of the OCIO, having begun there in 2007 as a senior associate CIO. He was promoted to chief deputy CIO in January 2013. Before joining the department, Loo was director of consulting services for CGI-AMS, a role he held for 11 years. Loo is a graduate of the University of California at Los Angeles with a bachelor of science in chemical engineering. He received his master of business administration degree from the UCLA Anderson School of Management.
  • Soheil Katal, CIO of the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), among the nation’s largest school districts. Katal has been with the district since 2015, serving in several increasingly responsible roles before being named CIO in April 2019. Before that, he held executive IT positions in the private sector, including with Detection Logic, United Technologies and Red Hawk Fire and Security. He received his bachelor of science degree in mathematics/operational research from S&B University, and he earned his master’s in business administration in IT from the Florida Institute of Technology.

For the last two years, Data Con LA had been held virtually. This year, it’s combining with imData, another industry conference, for a joint gathering.

“After two years of virtual events, I think we can all agree that we’re ready to be back for the in-person event,” conference organizer Subash D’Souza said in a news release. D’Souza is the director of Cloud Data Engineering for the Office of the Chancellor for California State University.

The emphasis on the first day, he said, will be on artificial intelligence, machine learning, data visualization and data engineering. The second day will include a special track dedicated to NFTs, innovation and blockchain.

In addition, D’Souza put out a call for anyone wishing to present a paper at the conference to register online to do so by the June 15 deadline.

More information about the conference, including registration details, are available online.
