Little Hoover to Circle Back on AI in Government Report

The recommendations made by the Little Hoover Commission about artificial intelligence in state government back in 2024 will be discussed as part of an upcoming hearing later this month.

The report at the center of the upcoming hearing, Artificial Intelligence and California State Government, was first published in December 2024 and focused on nine recommendations around the rapidly evolving technology in public service:

1. The creation of a state AI computing center
2. The creation of a state AI council
3. Give state workers access to “general-purpose” GenAI tools
4. Remove adoption barriers for state agencies and departments
5. Improve procurement and risk assessment
6. Enable worker input through various channels
7. Educate the public about how tools are used in state government
8. Establish legislative oversight with a Select Committee on California Public Sector AI
9. Expand GenAI procurement and risk-mitigation policies to all technologies with “significant risk”

The witnesses participating in this hearing have not yet been announced. Participants will have an opportunity to provide public comment.
