One Laptop Per Child (OLPC), a nonprofit that aims to bring inexpensive computers to developing countries, is hopping on the tablet bandwagon. OLPC has distributed laptops to over 2.4 million children in 42 countries and in 25 languages. This week at CES in Las Vegas, the organization, in conjunction with chip supplier Marvell Technology, debuted a prototype called XO-3.
When designing the tablet, OLPC included features that would help the tablet function in the rugged environments where electricity may not be available. The tablet is the only one of its kind that can be charged by solar panels, hand cranks, and other alternative power sources. Tablets with a display from Pixel Qi are designed to be readable in strong sunlight. The tablet will have an 8-inch 1024X768 screen. The XO-3 is planned to begin production at the end of 2012.
