Sacramento gets rebate for virtualizing servers

Sacramento County has received a $27,000 rebate check from the Sacramento County Municipal Utility District (SMUD) for the energy savings as a result of server virtualization.

The Department of Technology virtualized 350 physical servers onto 34 physical server hosts, which reduces power consumption and increases reliability for Sacramento’s computer systems, the county announced.

SMUD offers special programs and rebates for individuals, businesses and public services that increase their energy efficiency and use renewable energy. They provide rebates of up to $125 for using efficient dishwashers and clothes washers, and rebates to businesses and public services that use more efficient equipment and lighting systems.

‘We are continuing with our energy saving projects by consolidating our Datacenter racks and further reducing Datacenter cooling requirements," said Rami Zakaria, chief information officer for Sacramento.  "This project is one of many that we are working on to reduce energy consumption and better use valuable data center resources."
