SailPoint Names 2 to Focus on State SLED Market

The two have deep backgrounds in technology — one in the private sector and the other in California state government.

SailPoint Technologies, which provides governments with identity management and governance solutions, has brought in two veteran technologists to focus on California’s state/local/education (SLED) vertical, primarily with state agencies and departments.

SailPoint Sales Director Richard Rossman told Industry Insider — California that in the last six months, SailPoint has increased its focus on state government, specifically in identity governance and administration (IGA), along with data governance mapped to Cal-Secure. That focus is especially important, SailPoint notes, in targeting “the inherent risk that comes with providing technology access across today’s diverse and remote workforce.”

The new team members, both based in the Sacramento area, are sales executive Steven Garcia and advisory solutions consultant Alex Bonnifield.

Garcia, who has almost three decades’ experience in supporting the California SLED markets from the value-added reseller channel, will lead SailPoint’s business development efforts in Northern California.

“His experience with IT infrastructure, enterprise applications, and cloud will serve him well,” Rossman said, “as he helps the state of California government understand how SailPoint can increase cyber resiliency by fostering organizations to change the way they manage users and their access to applications, systems and data.”

Garcia, in comments to Industry Insider — California, quoted SailPoint’s chief information security officer: “Our CISO, Heather Gantt-Evans, says it best: ‘Cyber resiliency is not about technology, it’s about people.’ I’m excited to be a part of this leading-edge organization that is at the very top of their game when it comes to identity governance and security. My charter is to help the state of California get to the holy grail of role-based access control, so that they can effectively automate user access provisioning for all.”

Garcia has held key roles in IT for the last 30 years, including executive and management positions with companies including Optm, Enterprise Networking Solutions, Allied Network Solutions, OmniPro Systems, MicroAge of Sacramento, CompuCom and Ameridata. He is an alumnus of Sacramento City College.

Garcia explained why he brought Bonnifield into the company: “I recruited Alex Bonnifield knowing his 10 years of state experience in security, operations, infrastructure and cloud would continue to serve California, just in a more focused way, to help achieve the state’s goals around IGA and data governance.”

Bonnifield, who has a deep background with state government, told Industry Insider why he joined SailPoint.

“Organizations have always struggled with providing the right access to their employees quickly and in a way that is secure,” Bonnifield said. “I joined SailPoint because I see the benefits of implementing identity and data governance to protect the confidentiality, integrity and availability for all user information. I’m excited to help organizations elevate their security posture with SailPoint, by fostering global participation to better understand each person’s role in becoming cyber resilient.”

Bonnifield began his tenure with the Financial Information System for California (FI$Cal), where he rose to the position of systems software specialist before joining the California High-Speed Rail Authority as information security officer/architect. From there, Bonnifield moved to the California Department of Veterans Affairs, where he served as chief of enterprise infrastructure and then technology operations manager. He joined SailPoint last month.

He is an alumnus of Cuesta College, where he received his associate’s degree, and California State University at Sacramento, where he earned his Bachelor of Science in computer science. Bonnifield has also been an instructor for almost nine years with MTI College in Sacramento, specializing in the following subjects and certifications: Cisco Certified Entry Network Technician (CCENT), Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA), Installing and Configuring Windows Server 2012, Administering Windows Server 2012, Configuring Advanced Server 2012 Services, and CompTIA Security+ and Linux Operating Systems.

In addition, according to his LinkedIn profile, he “assisted in the career development of over 200 students by providing career counseling and mentorship for real-world preparation. Instructed students on security best practices and how these practices apply to deployment of industry applications such as active directory, IIS, etc.”
