San Bernardino County CIO Pivots to Innovation Role

The county’s top technologist, Lynn Fyhrlund, has announced that he has accepted a new role as the regional government’s chief innovation officer. Fyhrlund has served as the county’s CIO since 2023.

San Bernardino County CIO Lynn Fyhrlund has been tapped to serve as the regional government’s first chief innovation officer.

Fyhrlund announced the transition in a LinkedIn post this week, writing that the new role is “about more than technology” and will instead center on “reimagining how we serve our community.”

“We have an opportunity to modernize service delivery, strengthen data-informed decision-making and responsibly leverage emerging technologies like AI to improve outcomes for residents and employees alike,” he wrote.

Fyhrlund has been serving as the county’s CIO since May 2023. Before that, he served as IT director of business applications and then as CIO for Milwaukee County, Wis. He also brings more than 24 years of experience with the U.S. Army.

“Innovation in government isn’t just about new tools; it’s about building a culture of continuous improvement, accountability and bold thinking across every department,” he wrote. “I’m grateful for the trust placed in me and excited to partner across the organization to help shape what’s next for San Bernardino County.”

Fyhrlund has a Master of Business Administration in strategic leadership from the Wisconsin School of Business and a Bachelor of Arts in computer science from Lakeland University.
