Secretary of State’s online voter registration app selected as Best of California winner

The California Secretary of State’s online voter registration app RegisterToVote.ca.gov has been selected by the Center for Digital Government as Best Application Serving the Public.

"My team worked at breakneck speed last year to build the California online voter registration system that made it as easy as possible for any eligible Californian to register any time from anywhere," said Secretary of State Debra Bowen in a press release. "The award is a wonderful recognition of that monumental accomplishment in service to the people of California.”

The system was federally funded and connects the Secretary of State, the Department of Motor Vehicles and 58 county elections offices with security procedures and policies to protect applicants’ privacy.

The app was launched Sept. 19, 2012. Of the 17.8 million Californians registered to vote, 883,600 used the online system to register for the first time or update their record.

The award will be one of 17 to be presented on Aug. 21 at the 2013 GTC West Best of California awards ceremony in Sacramento.
