State Agencies Recruiting for Section Chief, Software Support Specialist

The California Department of Veterans Affairs position has an IT manager I classification, and the California Department of Technology vacancy has an IT specialist II designation.

Two departments in state government are recruiting for experienced IT professionals with specialties.

The California Department of Veterans Affairs (CalVet) is seeking a section chief (IT manager I) to oversee the Enterprise Infrastructure Section, which is responsible for installation, configuration, maintenance and tuning of CalVet’s network infrastructure, both on-site and cloud-based. The section chief will be responsible for virtual and physical servers, virtual desktops, storage, backup and offsite replication, wireless infrastructure, voice over Internet protocol (VOIP), video teleconference (VTC) and mobile device management, according to the job posting and duty statement.

“The incumbent will act as a subject matter expert on the most complex IT projects, providing technical oversight, support and assistance within the Enterprise Infrastructure Section and to other sections within the Information Services Division, as well as the rest of the department,” the duty statement says. Other responsibilities of the position include:

  • Organize, plan, lead, delegate and monitor work assignments. Train and lead staff; establish protocols; and set network, desktop and other technical standards and documentation.
  • “Provide technical vision upon which the department’s technological growth is based, with a special focus on cloud technologies: Amazon Web Services, Software-as-a-service. … Lead the Enterprise Network Group and other CalVet staff as needed in documenting, requesting, testing and installing approved new technological solutions.” 
  • Work directly with management to develop technology goals and objectives for the division and the department/agency. 
  • “Work collaboratively with the information security officer to provide and ensure effective and secure technical designs, testing and implementation expertise for CalVet’s Internet/Intranet access requirements, including evaluating, recommending and installing firewall software and hardware to ensure adequate security and fail-over redundancy.”
The position has a monthly salary range of $8,016 to $10,742, and the application deadline is April 30.

The California Department of Technology is recruiting for a “master-level technical software support specialist” (IT specialist II) to optimize and apply architecture solutions and play a key role in advising management and formulating IT strategy and policy. The specialist will work with a team to support the database components of an (IBM) Z System and client/server computing environment, according to the job posting.

Other responsibilities of the position include:

  • Install, maintain, test, monitor and tune the most complex vendor software products and other third-party vendor database software products and/or general purpose software products in these computing environments.
  • Develop and maintain customized online and/or batch interfaces and exits to the software.
  • Provide consultation and support as needed to support the customer department staff in the use of these products.
  • Quickly, efficiently and effectively troubleshoot and resolve the most complex customer problems and identify possible future problems.
The position has a monthly salary range of $7,365 to $9,869, and the application deadline is May 2.
