Andrew Warren, a veteran state employee and the chief technology officer at the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS), retired Jan. 29 and the department’s technology leader has chosen his interim successor. CalPERS CIO Christian Farland has named Stephenson Loveson as interim CTO, a department spokesperson told Techwire via email. Stephenson “previously and concurrently” is the assistant division chief over the CalPERS Data Center in its Technology Infrastructure Services Division, previously under Warren. CalPERS will mount an “open, competitive recruitment in the near future.”
Contacted by Techwire, Warren — a nearly 15-year CalPERS staffer — said via email he had had “the honor” to work on many projects and “operational efforts” at the department, both as CTO and during his tenure. He added: “I am most proud of the amazing transition CalPERS was able to do in March of 2020 when we built and deployed a remote work solution overnight, which allowed our team members to safely work at home.”
Asked what project or initiative he wished he had been able to see to completion, Warren said: “With IT, there are always opportunities for projects and initiatives to improve the way the business areas improve the services delivered. CalPERS is currently modernizing the network and while I will be interested in hearing about how it comes out, I know that the network team has it well in hand.”
The retired CTO said on LinkedIn he will be focusing on his music, traveling with his wife, “spending more time on my bike and I might even turn a wrench again.”
