According to its website, the California Technology Agency has released a Request for Information (RFI) seeking information from vendors on Text-to-9-1-1 technologies available to improve the state’s emergency communications system. It is part of the agency’s Next Generation 9-1-1 planning efforts to modernize the system that will include support of multi-media technology including photos and video.
The FCC and the nation’s four largest wireless carriers — AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile — reached an agreement last year to make texting to 911 available nationwide by May 15, 2014.
California’s Public Safety Communications Office plans to implement a Text-to-911 pilot project in California by the fall of 2013, according to spokesperson Christine Lally.
The deadline to respond to the RFI is March 20, 2013. Read more details here.
