State Launches 'Every Woman Counts' App for Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening

The California Department of Health Care Services has launched a mobile application aimed at helping women stay healthy, according to department CIO Chris Cruz.

"This is a great opportunity to ensure that Californians have the necessary information and education to make informed decisions about their health," said Cruz in a statement emailed to Techwire.

The app, called "Every Woman Counts Breast and Cervical Cancer Screening Reminder Application," is now available in the Apple Store and will soon be available in the Android version.  The app, which was developed in-house by state employees, uses a mobile messaging system to remind women about regular appointments and exams, as well as the latest news regarding breast and cervical cancer.

In the summer of 2014, DHCS will also roll out its "Welltopia by DHCS" app to complement the Welltopia Facebook page. The Facebook page and its upcoming app will offer information and outside resources on everyday health, including nutrition, physical activity, stress management and smoking cessation.

DHCS won an award for its California Health Care Report Card application as "Best Mobile/Wireless Project" in the 2013 Best of California awards and "Most Valuable Application" at the California Mobility Technology Conference. The press release stated that DHCS plans to continue developing its mobile messaging system for future apps.
