State of California wins 2nd place in national web competition

With awards season officially underway, the State of California portal has won second place in the Center for Digital Government’s annual Best of the Web portal competition, the Center announced today.

The annual competition includes a survey of state and local government entries based on three categories: innovation, functionality and efficiency and economy.

"Digital technology has fundamentally changed the way people interact with their government and we are seeing it demonstrated through everything from full service portals to special purpose mobile apps," said Todd Sander, executive director of the Center for Digital Government, in a press release.

Alameda County won third place among the counties across the nation. Sacramento County was ranked as a finalist.

The City of Riverside won fourth place in the city category.

The State of California won first place in the portal competition in 2010.

The CA.gov portal has 10.6 million unique visitors a month, according to the Technology Agency website.

The awards are judged by Center executives and representatives of the previous year’s winner, according to the announcement. States, counties and cities submit detailed, written nominations to enter the competition.

The Center for Digital Government is a national research and advisory institute on information technology policies and best practices in state and local government.
