In a bid to improve state IT projects, public and private sector representatives will be named to a task force to create a program that evaluates the performance of state contractors.
The California Department of Technology (CalTech) is compiling a list of interested parties, a department official said Monday.
The idea came out of last month’s vendor forum after a wide-ranging discussion about how to implement a program so state officials could keep track of technology companies that have not performed well on state contracts. Among the key concerns is how to develop a system that creates accountability while reflecting the responsibilities of state programs and private sector contractors that manage and develop IT projects.
Near the end of the two-hour discussion, Verizon executive Kathryn Hirst proposed California consider similar programs that measure performance in other states like Florida, Texas and Nevada. CalTech Director Carlos Ramos polled the audience of vendors and state officials, and they backed the idea.
Supporters of a task force say it could help state officials narrow the issues they face in creating a new program.
CalTech held its first vendor forum in December as a part of an effort to reform California’s IT procurement process. Last July, as part of a Governors Reorganization Plan, the program that handles the procurement of major IT projects, was moved from the Department of General Services to CalTech.
