Data Inventory Bill Sent to Gov. Brown

SB 1444 also calls for agencies to establish procedures to facilitate communication between an incident response team, agency officials and individuals affected by a breach. State agencies hold the records of millions of Californians in their systems.

The Assembly last week sent Gov. Jerry Brown legislation that would require state agencies to inventory all computerized data that contains personal information.

State Sen. Bob Hertzberg, D-Van Nuys, introduced the bill after a 2015 state auditor report found many state entities had weaknesses in their controls over information security, leaving some of the state’s sensitive data “vulnerable to unauthorized use, disclosure or disruption."

SB 1444 also calls for agencies to establish procedures to facilitate communication between an incident response team, agency officials, and individuals affected by a breach. State agencies hold the records of millions of Californians in their systems.

There have been 657 data breaches affecting more than 500 Californians and more than 49 million records since 2012, according to the attorney general.
