Scott Gregory's new role is now permanent and official: He has been appointed deputy director of the Office of Digital Innovation at the California Department of Technology, the governor's office announced on Friday.
Gregory, who since 2011 has served as the state geographic information officer, has been managing the department's new Office of Digital Innovation and Technology Engagement since it launched in early 2016.
The office is tasked with projects, including the state's redesigned CA.gov home page, and is overseeing the Department of Technology's newly created innovation lab.
The lab, housed in the state's private cloud, is a secure workspace where government users are encouraged to develop open source code that could be used by a multitude of state agencies and departments.
“This is a significant paradigm shift on how the state will approach technology in the future,” Gregory told Techwire earlier this year. “I truly believe that by providing an environment for us to start to experiment and develop using open source technology, we’re going to see incredible results.”
According to the governor's office, Gregory has many years of public-sector experience in the GIS field.
He was a public safety manager at the Environmental Systems Research Institute from 2005 to 2010, geographic information systems manager at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Sacramento District from 2001 to 2005 and a programmer analyst at Anteon Corp. from 1999 to 2001. Gregory was a geographic information systems specialist for Sacramento County from 1997 to 1999.
