Actor in Water District Cyber Attack Identified

News outlets reported that the Daixin Team is behind a breach at the North Texas Municipal Water District.

The Dallas Morning News reported last week that Daixin Team took responsibility for the recent cyber breach of the North Texas Municipal Water District (NTMWD).

According to the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) website, Daixin Team emerged around June 2022 with a focus on the health and public health sector. They have been known to deploy ransomware to encrypt servers and then steal personal data and hold it for ransom.

“Ransomware group Daixin Team claimed responsibility for the attack on the dark web and said it obtained names, dates of birth, medical record numbers and Social Security numbers from the district. According to screenshots posted on social media by cybersecurity experts, the group said it stole 33,844 files and threatened to release data soon,” the newspaper reported.

The water district, which serves more than two million, continues to have a red alert on its website regarding resulting phone interruptions. There was no date given, and the incident isn’t yet listed at the state’s reporting website. Law enforcement is involved, according to the district.

Near Houston, the small city of Nassau Bay was recently hit by Akira, according to reports. Lat month, the city reported the attack affected more than 8,500 people, according to the state’s Data Security Breach Reports site.
