The Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) Correctional Institutions Division is gearing up to issue a request for proposal (RFP) for a body-worn camera (BWC) system.

According to the pre-solicitation, the request for the project — referred to as the Body Camera Initiative — will “include all equipment, services, labor and all things necessary for the installation, maintenance, warranty and training of the BWC system at designated correctional facilities.”

As listed in the state budget signed by Gov. Greg Abbott on June 18, approximately $24 million will be allocated to TDCJ for body-worn cameras in the biennium.

The department employs about 20,000 correctional officers and more than 100 prison units, according to its website.
