Laredo’s New Police Chief Looks Toward Process Automation

With an online platform, the department aims to improve crime response and communications within the community.

Twenty-five-year police veteran Miguel Angel Rodriguez Jr. is the incoming Laredo Police Department (LPD) chief.

He spoke to the Laredo Morning Times this week about numerous plans to improve the department, including better use of technology.

Rodriguez said he wants the LPD to be more efficient. Deploying the online reporting system for Priority 3 calls is one way to do this. These calls include crimes like theft of trash bins or cellphones and vehicle burglary. Police typically take longer to respond to these items, and moving incident reports online will allow for faster email updates for residents.

Rodriguez said the online platform will include a chat box for residents and options for ordering police reports such as traffic accident reports for insurance needs.

Platform testing should begin by December, with a January implementation.

An online system will also assist the department in mapping “hot spot” crime areas and deploying resources to them.
