The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) awarded state Rep. Giovanni Capriglione (R-District 98) with the association’s 2023 Technology Champion Award last week.

“I will always work to ensure Texas leads the way on cybersecurity, data privacy and government innovation,” Capriglione wrote on Twitter.

Capriglione chairs the Investment in Information Technology Improvement, Oversight Committee and the bipartisan Innovation and Technology Caucus of the Texas Legislature. He is associated with multiple bills this legislative session that touch technology, information security or how business is done on the web.

During his tenure in the state Legislature, he has:
  • Passed legislation to require cybersecurity training and incident reporting by state and local governments
  • Pushed for and achieved increased funding for cybersecurity and legacy modernization
  • Created the Cybersecurity Council
  • Passed data management legislation
  • Increased focus on data privacy initiatives

Capriglione was nominated by state CIO Amanda Crawford, who described him as “an unmatched innovator whose contributions have advanced state government information technology across multiple fields.” Crawford also described him as “a tireless advocate for cybersecurity, legacy modernization, data management and the need to protect Texans’ privacy,” according to a news release.

The Technology Champion Award recognizes outstanding individual contributions to public-sector IT.
