State’s Chief Data Officer Dives Into AI Conversation

DIR’s Neil Cooke speaks with Governing’s podcast crew about data management and its impact on AI; he also discusses how his agency and the Legislature are leading data and AI policy.

Texas’ chief data officer Neil Cooke recently appeared on The Future in Context, the podcast from Industry Insider Texas’ sister publication Governing.*

AI as a Stress Test for Government Data” is the April 22 edition during which Cooke took a deeper dive into how Texas uses data to understand constituents and how data must be clean for this purpose and, of course, in training AI systems
Of note to Texans, the state studied data from Winter Storm Uri to inform energy forecasting and data about Internet services and to stand up the Broadband Development Office.

Discussion includes legislation regarding data management, data silos, clean data and AI’s relationship to data governance. Cooke also explains how AI can delve into both structured and unstructured data to bring insights to decision-makers.

Finally, he discusses privacy, ethics and legal aspects of allowing AI access to data pools.
