The Texas A&M University System is searching for a new chief information officer following the retirement of longtime technology leader Mark A. Stone, who held the role for more than 12 years.

Stone joined the A&M System in 2013 as system CIO, where he was responsible for shaping enterprise IT strategy across one of the country’s largest higher education networks. Over the course of his tenure, he led systemwide initiatives in cybersecurity, networking and enterprise applications while aligning technology functions with the system’s broader academic and operational goals.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Stone stepped down from the position in September. The system has not yet publicly announced his successor.

Stone's role in the A&M System placed him at the center of IT planning and governance for a statewide network of 12 universities, a health science center and multiple state agencies. With more than 26,000 employees and a budget of $7.3 billion, the system maintains a presence in nearly every Texas county and accounts for more than $1 billion in annual research activity.

Following his retirement, Stone is still listed on the Texas Artificial Intelligence Advisory Council website, though the page has not been updated to reflect his departure from the A&M System. The council provides recommendations on the ethical use and implementation of AI in state government programs.

The university system’s Office of Information Technology website notes that the system is in the process of searching for a new CIO, though no public job listing is available as of this writing.
