The vice chief functions as the command’s lead strategist, guiding long-term planning, leadership structure and statewide cybersecurity campaigns. The role oversees cyber threat intelligence and incident analysis units and supports the phased transfer of cybersecurity functions from other state agencies to the command by early 2027.
The position collaborates with state leaders, federal partners, and academic institutions to coordinate the state’s cybersecurity ecosystem and develop national-level policy.
It is based in San Antonio or Austin and pays between $19,167 and $20,417 per month. Requirements include:
- Eight years of senior-level cybersecurity or risk experience
- Eight years of technical experience in a relevant field
- Six years of supervisory experience
- Experience leading complex enterprise or national security organizations
The deputy chief will serve as the command’s operational lead, responsible for coordinating statewide cyber defense campaigns and converting intelligence into active incident response strategies. The position oversees distributed response teams and manages high-stakes threat scenarios that impact critical systems and infrastructure across the state.
The role is based in San Antonio or Austin and pays between $19,167 and $20,417 per month. Minimum qualifications include:
- 10 years of senior-level cybersecurity or risk management experience
- 10 years of technical-level experience in areas such as threat detection or incident response
- Eight years of supervisory experience
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams in high-pressure environments

Created through House Bill 150 and backed by $345 million in funding, TXCC is centralizing the state’s cybersecurity infrastructure and operations under three core technical units: a Cyber Threat Intelligence Center, a Digital Forensics Lab and Incident Response.
Led by Cyber Chief T.J. White, TXCC will assume cybersecurity responsibilities currently managed by the Texas Department of Information Resources by the end of 2026.
