Texas Cyber Command is recruiting a director to lead its Cybersecurity Incident Response Unit, providing another look at how the new state agency is staffing its operational leadership structure.
The opening follows a series of director-level recruitments this summer that detailed the command’s Information Sharing and Analysis Organization and three centers focused on stakeholders, cybersecurity practices and innovation. The command’s strategic plan identifies the Cybersecurity Incident Response Unit as part of its Unified Cyber Task Force, alongside the Network Security Operations Center and Digital Forensics Laboratory.
The incident response unit is responsible for detecting and containing cybersecurity incidents, neutralizing threats, assisting with system restoration and conducting post-incident monitoring. It also works with the command’s threat intelligence and digital forensics operations to identify weaknesses, develop risk mitigation options and recommend vulnerability-reduction strategies.
The hiring comes as the command continues building the workforce outlined in its 2027-2031 strategic plan. The plan reported 48 full-time employees as of May and an anticipated workforce of 122 employees, along with additional knowledge-expert contractors.
Statewide cybersecurity employees and functions transferred from the Department of Information Resources to Texas Cyber Command on March 1. As of May, the department was still providing some human resources, IT and procurement support while the command developed its own administrative capabilities.
Applications for the incident response director position must be submitted through the state’s CAPPS Careers system. The posting lists one opening and identifies the position as a regular, full-time state job.
Based in Austin, the full-time position carries a monthly salary range of $12,250 to $13,083.33. Applications are due Oct. 11.
