Texas Seeking Volunteers to Help Protect Against Cyber Attacks

Teams would be deployed as needed wherever there is an emergency.

A large Texas department is putting out the call for volunteers to help with technical emergencies.

And it’s not just a one-way street. Those selected for the program are promised the opportunity to receive additional training.

The Texas Volunteer Incident Response Team (VIRT) is seeking people with cybersecurity incident response experience and other related skills to help protect Texas in case of emergency. According to the Department of Information Resources, workers will be deployed when there is a governor’s cyber disaster declaration.

“Now is your chance to join the Texas Volunteer Incident Response Team,” said Amanda Crawford, chief information officer for DIR, in a LinkedIn post. “The Texas VIRT is comprised of volunteers with expertise addressing cybersecurity events and provides eligible public entities with rapid cybersecurity incident response assistance.”

Travel and per diem reimbursements will be provided, and there is no obligation to deploy if a volunteer is unavailable when called.

Applicants must:
  • Review the handbook.
  • Return a completed application.
  • Undergo a DIR review.
  • Undergo a background check.
  • Sign a nondisclosure agreement (if hired).
