Texas Southern University Requests $6.6M for AI Initiative

The university is hoping to streamline administrative operations, improve AI literacy and enhance recruitment efforts. It has also requested millions more from the Legislature for other tech-related initiatives.

Texas Southern University (TSU) has requested $6.6 million for an artificial intelligence initiative in its Fiscal Year 2026-27 legislative appropriations request (LAR).

Dubbed “AI-Driven Excellence: Transforming Student Success from Recruitment to Graduation,” the goal of the initiative is to enhance “operational efficiencies in student recruitment, admissions, progression and successful graduation.”

The university plans to procure AI tools that can identify prospective students and engage with them via personalized marketing efforts, enhance retention through student performance insights, streamline administrative processes and improve AI literacy through an expansion of classroom curriculum.

The following IT items are also included in the university’s exceptional items request:
  • $7.9 million for an aerospace engineering initiative
  • $4.4 million to expand online learning programs
  • $820,300 to establish a TSU Center for Nursing Education, Research and Maternal-Infant Health online program
  • $390,000 for TSU’s pharmacy satellite campuses
  • $250,000 for IT components of its student success initiative, Tiger Success Unlimited
