The Texas Department of Transportation’s (TxDOT) draft 2027 Unified Transportation Program includes $37.6 million in traffic management technology projects, with most of the planned investment concentrated along Central Texas corridors.

The draft program, which guides transportation project development for fiscal years 2027-2036, lists eight named traffic management technology projects. The work is largely tied to I-35 and SH 71 in the Austin District, with one additional project listed in the Bryan District.

In the Austin District, three I-35 traffic management technology projects are listed across Travis County, Hays County and the city of San Marcos. The projects cover Slaughter Lane to the Hays County line, the Hays County line to SL 82 and SL 82 to the Comal County line. Together, those projects total about $16.5 million and are funded through Category 12 Strategic Priority. The draft places all three in the fiscal years 2031-2036 letting range.

Two additional traffic management technology projects are listed on SH 71 in Travis County. One runs from SH 130 to Onion Creek, with an estimated construction cost of $453,599. The other runs from Onion Creek to Norwood Lane, with an estimated cost of $1.7 million. Both are scheduled for fiscal years 2027-2030 and funded through Category 2 Metropolitan and Urban Corridor Projects.

The Williamson County section of the Austin District includes two more I-35 traffic management technology projects. The Georgetown segment, from SH 29 to the Bell County line, is listed at $9.4 million. The Round Rock segment, from SH 45 to SH 29, is listed at $6.1 million. Both are scheduled for fiscal years 2031-2036 and funded through Category 12 Strategic Priority.

The Bryan District includes one named traffic management technology project: SH 30 Traffic Mgmt. Technology - Roans Prairie at SH 90. The project is listed as a new authorization for fiscal years 2031-2036, with an estimated construction cost of $3.4 million, funded through Category 12 Strategic Priority.

The 2027 draft UTP is a planning document, not a construction guarantee. The draft states that the program authorizes TxDOT and local partners to prepare projects for construction based on potential future cash flow. The Texas Transportation Commission is required to adopt the UTP no later than Aug. 31 each year.
