The city of West Lake Hills is moving ahead with an AI traffic signal initiative, with city officials discussing funding, vendor options and next steps in recent public meetings.

West Lake Hills City Council discussed AI traffic detection for the RM 2244/Bee Cave Road corridor at its April 22 meeting. Publicly available meeting records also show supporting materials tied to the item, including files labeled “AGENDA RPT - AI signals” and “Exhibit B NoTraffic - THP packet.”

During that meeting, city officials described the AI traffic lights as the city’s “most popular initiative” and said the devices that would enable the signals would cost $360,000. Staff also told council that recent conversations with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) suggested the city might use a different vendor than initially discussed, but that the price would remain the same.

The transcript also shows city officials identifying about $300,000 in ad valorem tax revenue proceeds that could help support the AI signal work. Council then voted in support of budget amendments to keep the initiative moving forward, with staff saying an ordinance would need to come back at the next meeting to effectuate the amendments.

Public records show NoTraffic and Texas Highway Products are tied to the project, though city officials indicated the final vendor arrangement could change as the project moves forward.

The effort also fits within West Lake Hills’ broader mobility planning. The city’s 2025-2027 Strategic Plan calls for collaboration with TxDOT and Rollingwood to improve traffic flow along Bee Cave Road and to explore joint mobility and infrastructure opportunities.
