The Fair Political Practices Commission (FPPC), the state’s political watchdog, is interested in exploring options for application development platforms.

At an Oct. 14 free meetup beginning at 7 p.m. at the Hacker Lab in Sacramento, the FPPC will hear from the region’s developer community and evaluate five existing platforms:

  • Power Search by MapLight in partnership with the California Secretary of State
  • Django CAL-ACCESS by the California Civic Data Coalition
  • followthemoney.org by the National Institute on Money in State Politics
  • OpenFEC API by 18F
  • Civic Information API by Google

FPPC Chair Jodi Remke will be in attendance.

“How might civic technologists build interfaces that help voters better understand how money is used in elections? Are existing application programming interfaces (APIs) usable or does the State of California need a new platform?” Hacker Lab said in the event announcement.
