40 Percent of Californians are Uncertain About Governments Using AI

Four in 10 Californians are concerned about ethical uses of AI by governments.

Artificial intelligence is becoming a part of many parts of Californians' lives, from assistants like Alexa and Siri to autonomous vehicles.

And while groups like the Little Hoover Commission are exploring AI's affects on industry segments, like labor and education, over half of Californians believe AI could make government services more convenient and faster to access, according to a McGuire Research survey from Accenture.

"Artificial Intelligence (AI) is described to respondents as chatbots, robots, virtual assistants, intelligent machines, etc., such as Alexa or Google Home" for the survey, according to the research methodology description.

The survey also found 6 out of 10 Californians use AI in their own lives.

More than half of California residents are comfortable with some of the ways AI is used, but only 40 percent of respondents are confident governments could responsibly use AI.

Comparatively, 33 percent of Americans were uncertain about governments using AI ethically. But 18 percent of Californians did not support the use of AI by governments at all.

The survey also found that the more clearly defined the use of AI by government was, the more comfortable Californians were with the idea. 58 percent were comfortable with a chatbot answering questions about government services while 61 percent were comfortable with an artificial intelligence interface answering questions after hours.
