Board of Equalization joins in California's push for open data

The  California State Board of Equalization – responsible for sales, use and other taxes and fees – on May 1st launched Open BOE, an open data portal which consolidates tax data that can be downloaded or exported into various formats and charts. The portal allows access to aggregate tax, revenue and expenditure data for use by media, institutions, government agencies and the public, but does not reveal confidential taxpayer information.

Currently, the site offers 13 different data sets, as well as various statistics and reports. Planned enhancements include additional functionality such as graphics and visualizations, mapping capabilities, and more frequent data updates.

BOE’s data portal is available at http://www.boe.ca.gov/dataportal/default.aspx.

Department of Technology Director Carlos Ramos recently announced plans to develop a statewide open data portal.

"We’re putting hundreds and hundreds of services online," said Ramos, citing taxes, car registration, licensing, childcare services and university registration among online offerings.
