When former state CIO Carlos Ramos retired from state government, he was serving as the chair of the California Broadband Council.

The council is coordinating with the Department of Technology to name a replacement for Ramos, and acting state CIO Amy Tong is chair of the council for now. The council was established in 2010 via legislation to increase broadband deployment and adoption statewide.

The nine-member council includes State Sen. Ben Hueso, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy, Utilities and Communications, who serves as vice chair of the Broadband Council; Catherine Sandoval, commissioner, California Public Utilities; Mark Ghilarducci, secretary, California Emergency Management Agency; Tom Torlakson, superintendent of Public Instruction; Daniel Kim, director, Department of General Services; Brian P. Kelly, secretary, California Transportation Agency; Sunne Wright McPeak, president and CEO, California Emerging Technology Fund; and Mike Gipson, assemblymember.

Gipson, D-Carson, replaced Assemblymember Mike Gatto on the council in April. Gipson was appointed by Speaker Anthony Rendon.

Ramos retired from state government at the end of March.
