California Launches Ready.ca.gov Disaster Preparedness Site

The one-stop shop will help prepare Californians for the snowmelt that is making the state’s rivers and streams dangerous and for a summer of potentially extreme heat.

Gov. Gavin Newsom visited the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) Friday to announce ready.ca.gov, a one-stop shop to help the state’s residents prepare for emergencies and extreme weather.

The new site is part of Listos California, an effort by the state to help communities to prepare for and recover from emergencies.

“California is prepared for summer and peak wildfire season — with a surge in firefighters and equipment, better forest management, and one of the most tried and tested emergency management systems in the word,” Newsom said in a statement. “Make sure your family is prepared, too. Visit ready.ca.gov — a new resource to help keep California safe this weekend and all summer long.”

Listos California comprises a wealth of information, available in multiple languages, to give Californians life-saving messages through interactive, community-based strategies such as peer-to-peer phone banking and in-person events, according to a Cal OES press release.

Among the takeaways for Californians is the importance of extreme heat preparation, for which Listos California recently began its summer messaging work, including the wildfire awareness campaign for rural communities.

The agency also has enlisted state departments and agencies to promote water preparedness as California’s waterways, buoyed by snowmelt, increase in both water and speed, which create very cold, hazardous conditions. Agencies are promoting drowning prevention messages in more than a dozen languages that can be found at Listos California.
