With Windows 7 reaching the end of its life cycle in March 2020, CalPERS has begun the switch to Windows 10.
Planning for the switch began in 2016 and is scheduled to be complete in April 2018. This is about three months later than the original completion estimate, which was extended to make more time for application testing.
The rollout portion of the implementation began this year, in an effort to smooth delivery. The new system will provide more functionality through reduced downtimes and increased processing capabilities, and increase security of CalPERS data and identity information. The new system should also reduce the need for desktop support because of device issues.
According to the CalPERS CIO update from August, the project is 65 percent complete. The timeline could be pushed back again if ClearCase and ClearQuest, development tools currently being used and tested on Windows 10, are not validated on time. A Web-based solution for this possibility is currently being developed.
So far, more than 1,550 devices have been migrated and Phase 2 for early adopters has begun.
The entire budget is $299,910 and $193,569 was spent as of the August update.
