Techwire will host a virtual briefing with two ranking technology executives for the California Public Employees’ Retirement System (CalPERS) on April 29.

Chief Information Officer Christian Farland and Chief Information Security Officer Liana Bailey-Crimmins are the speakers at the briefing, which will be moderated by Alan Cox, executive vice president of e.Republic* and publisher of Government Technology magazine, Techwire’s sister publication.

Farland, who was named CalPERS’ CIO in February 2018, manages the administration and direction of CalPERS’ IT services and strategy and provides leadership and counsel to the board and executive team. He oversees the 600-plus members of the agency’s IT team as well as the technology portfolio that makes up CalPERS’ $100 million IT budget. He previously served in a number of leadership roles at CalPERS, including chief technology business officer; interim chief for the Technology and Strategic Services Division; chief of IT Performance and Accountability; and enterprise transition management project manager for CalPERS’ transformation initiative for five years.

Bailey-Crimmins was named CalPERS’ chief information security officer in August 2019. As head of the Information Security Office, she oversees the team responsible for protecting the private data of nearly 2 million CalPERS members, as well as the $400 billion investment portfolio. Most recently, she served as CalPERS’ chief health director. Bailey-Crimmins first joined CalPERS as CIO for the IT Services Branch in August 2013, and before that she was the CIO of California Correctional Health Care Services (CCHCS). In 2015, she was honored with the prestigious “CIO of the Year” award from the California CIO Academy. Other honors include recognition for her work on CCHCS’ Telemedicine Program, which helped them win the 2012 Computerworld Honors Program Laureate Award, and the Best of California award in the Government Technology Digital Internal Category in 2011.

Cox has been a guest lecturer at universities and a frequent speaker for key government and industry organizations. For more than 35 years, he has worked with industry, education and government officials to help them better understand the importance and use of information technology.

The briefing has been shifted to a virtual event, as many in industry and government are working remotely as a result of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

The hourlong event will be streamed online, and those who had previously registered for the in-person event will automatically be registered for the virtual briefing. For more information or to register, see the information page for the event.
