Child Support, General Services Seek Applicants for Specialty Roles

The California Department of Child Support Services is recruiting for an insider threat security engineer, and the Department of General Services is seeking a senior network administrator.

State agencies have opened recruitments for two key specialty positions in technology.

The California Department of Child Support Services (DSCC) is seeking candidates for the position of insider threat security engineer (IT Specialist II) who will provide “a variety of expert-level risk management services” to the department, project teams and senior management.

“These services include the development, implementation, oversight and management of the Enterprise Insider Threat program” in the Risk and Privacy Office, part of the Technology Services Division’s Enterprise Architecture and Security Branch, according to the job posting.

Responsibilities of the position, according to the duty statement, include:
  • Threat identification and analysis (25 percent)
  • Threat monitoring (25 percent)
  • Threat investigation (25 percent)
  • Threat training and prevention (20 percent)
  • Other duties as needed (5 percent)

The monthly salary range for this position is $8,130 to $10,893, and the application deadline is Jan. 18.

The California Department of General Services (DGS) is seeking a senior network administrator (IT Specialist II) to serve as team leader and subject matter expert on the enterprise firewalls and network infrastructure for DGS.

According to the job posting and duty statement, the incumbent will lead “the design, implementation, configuration, maintenance, monitoring and administration of the enterprise Palo Alto Next Generation Firewalls and network infrastructure” for DGS, which is the state’s business manager. Additional duties of the role include:
  • Design, implement, configure and maintain network and firewall infrastructure across enterprise and cloud platforms by designing and implementing switching, routing and firewall solutions and procedures, and advising management, architects and vendors on the most sensitive issues. (35 percent)
  • Collaborate with the enterprise network architect in designing innovative network solutions by analyzing and maintaining network environments and enterprise firewalls; coordinate infrastructure systems specifications; perform upgrades and maintenance; and resolve the most complex technical issues for the Palo Alto Networks infrastructure. This includes utilizing collected data and patching firmware and version upgrades in order to sustain a supportable and uniform network infrastructure for the department. (30 percent)
  • Develop and implement product and process improvements to the technology and physical network by creating documentation of technology infrastructure department-wide; review, research and evaluate technology products and services for procurement of future enhancements; and provide sound recommendations to management, architects and staff to ensure DGS’ infrastructures are continuously enhanced and current for planning of the overall organizational IT strategy. (15 percent)
  • Resolve network and firewall issues across the enterprise by providing expert support to the DGS Help Desk team, satellite offices and remote workforce. (15 percent)
  • Lead independent research and studies and attend job-related training and workshops to maintain professional knowledge. (5 percent)

Applicants are also required to submit a Statement of Qualifications addressing two points:
  • Describe your experience designing, implementing and managing on-prem and cloud firewall technologies. Provide examples of specific firewall platforms or services you’ve worked with and the challenges you’ve encountered.
  • Explain how your network experience makes you the best candidate for this role as a senior network administrator specializing in firewall administration.

The monthly salary range for the position is $8,130 to $10,893, and the application deadline is Jan. 26.
