Courts' Strategic Plan Focuses on 4 Tech Goals

California's Judicial Council, the policy body constitutionally responsible for enforcing the impartial administration of justice by the state’s judicial branch, has released its Strategic Plan for Technology.

California's Judicial Council, the policy body constitutionally responsible for enforcing the impartial administration of justice by the state’s judicial branch, has released its Strategic Plan for Technology.

The Strategic Plan covers several years, 2019-2022, while the council's tactical plans break down strategic goals into specific steps.

“A technology vision guides the branch to where it needs to be to promote consistency statewide while providing local court innovation to best meet the needs of California citizens,” the 2017-18 tactical plan reads.

The new strategic plan echoes the theme of access seen in the last plan.

The four goals of the new plan include:

  • Promote the digital court — offering access to services 24/7, agnostic of device or platform, shared infrastructure between courts and criminal-justice partners
  • Innovate through the IT community — adopt educational resources, professional development programs, IT services and solutions and create a digital database of projects, procurement materials and purchase agreements
  • Advance IT security and infrastructure — provide infrastructure and network connectivity across all branches, ensure recovery of critical systems and improve identity management
  • Promote rule and legislative changes — align current technology with rules and legislation without inhibiting their use, choose solutions that allow for the modification of rules and legislation
