The Department of General Services signed an agreement with Sacramento Municipal Utility District (SMUD) this week to purchase 100 percent renewable energy for all its state-owned buildings in downtown Sacramento, including the state capitol.
The 108 gigawatt-hours of electricity that will be delivered by the SMUD Greenergy program, which purchases power from wind, water, solar, biomass and other renewable resources.
“The nominal cost associated with the program, estimated at an increase of $6 per megawatt-hour of electricity, will be paid for by existing rent paid to DGS by the state departments that reside in its state-owned buildings,” DGS announced.
With this purchase, the state of California says it trails only Illinois in green energy purchases by state governments.
