State insurance commissioner Dave Jones on Monday unveiled a new insurance option for drivers working for the ride-hailing service Lyft.
The new policy is designed to address the potential gaps in liability coverage for both drivers and their customers.
"As demand for ridesharing services increases, making sure ridesharing drivers are able to obtain insurance to protect themselves, their passengers and pedestrians has been a top priority," Jones said.
The Department of Insurance said the first-of-its-kind policy offered by MetLife covers “every stage of the ridesharing transaction” – while the driver is waiting for a passenger request, is en route to pick up a passenger, and during the trip with the passenger.
Legislation that went into effect on July 1 requires the driver or the transportation company to carry liability insurance during those three aforementioned phases of service.
