The California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR) is seeking a chief information officer (IT Manager II) to serve as “a principle-level manager responsible for establishing IT-related standards and policies” for the department, whose mission “is to protect human health and the environment by regulating pesticide sales and use, and by fostering reduced-risk pest management.”
The position has been open since the former CIO, Michael Wanser, was named assistant deputy director and chief technology officer for the California Department of Social Services in January.
“The CIO is responsible for overall direction and support of the department’s IT systems to ensure the business needs of the program objectives in support of DPR’s mission and goals are met,” the job posting says. The CIO “has management responsibility for DPR’s fully centralized IT activities and functions performed by the Office of Technology Services.”
In addition to developing and overseeing DPR’s technology budget, the CIO oversees and directs day-to-day IT operations (e.g., operational recovery, staffing requirements, budget procurement and contracting, equipment refresh, IT training, IT legislative analysis, and network security) in terms of planning, implementing, maintaining and managing department IT services.
The CIO also represents DPR regarding IT policy and proposed technology solutions with the agency information officer for the California Environmental Protection Agency as well as the CIOs of the boards, departments and offices within CalEPA. The CIO participates in external IT forums and keeps abreast of changing directions in the statewide IT environment and ensures that DPR’s interests are considered.
More details about the role can be found in the duty statement. The position has a monthly salary range of $10,421 to $12,668, and the application deadline is March 11.

The ISPO advises the directorate of security and privacy incidents and risks that threaten the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the DOR’s information assets.”
