The California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) is recruiting for a senior system engineer (IT Specialist II) for AWS and Azure cloud, providing architectural, engineering, operational and project management support for the agency’s IT systems, which include the server, storage, application, infrastructure and services.
“If you have experience with AWS cloud infrastructure and are interested in working in a dynamic team, this will be a good opportunity for you,” a CalHFA spokesperson told Techwire.
“The IT environment includes production, development, test and disaster recovery systems hosted in multiple sites – both on-prem and in the hybrid cloud – and this position’s duties include the entire system life cycle for IT hardware and software assets,” the job posting says.
According to the duty statement, CalHFA’s IT division implements and maintains systems and IT infrastructure “to improve service to partners and borrowers and keeps CalHFA on the competitive edge of the mortgage industry. IT also works with internal employees to maintain and improve CalHFA’s network of email and Internet services, as well as the many software programs used by other divisions.”

The California Department of Technology is seeking a data engineering architect (IT Specialist III) to serve in the department’s Office of Enterprise Technology. The principal data architect – a “mastery-level position,” according to the job posting – “serves as the lead consultant responsible for defining the next generation of trusted data engineering solutions.”
“Working as part of a fast-paced, agile and innovative team, the IT Spec III works across all areas of OET’s technology stack, enabling critical statewide data services, qualify complex data ELT/ETL, and trailblaze new data engineering solutions for the cloud,” the posting states. The architect makes recommendations to the state chief information officer and executives on data engineering platform standards, data automation opportunities, compliance, and on current and new data technology developments. “The IT Spec III works with external partners and customers on statewide efforts, which include but are not limited to departments’ and agencies’ development teams, vendors and partners to arrive at the most appropriate platform and infrastructure design or integration.”
The architect will report to CDT’s Carlos Isaac Cabrera, who in April was named the state geographic information officer and manager of data and geospatial services. In a LinkedIn post about the recruitment, Cabrera wrote: “We are looking for a Data Engineering Architect to join us! Do you love all things data and dream of being involved in transformative data projects for CA?” His team is working with other state entities on COVID-related initiatives involving data.

The California Department of Water Resources (DWR) is recruiting for two IT specialist positions of note.
DWR is seeking a technical lead (IT Specialist I) for the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Program, geographic information system (GIS) management, and client support.
The technical lead provides expert-level services in the UAV Program and supports the specialized Environmental Science IT business needs. Responsibilities of the position, according to the job posting and duty statement, include:
- Perform tasks related to completing UAV flight missions. Serve as a lead UAV drone operator in managing the UAV Program and maintaining drone equipment and accessories.

DWR is also seeking an IT Specialist I candidate to serve as a team leader on systems software projects and to work independently as an expert-level technical specialist, providing guidance on complex systems software assignments supporting commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software, custom software and Oracle database software to support the real-time 24/7 operations of SWP Power and Water Scheduling, Settlements (PWSS) and Data Warehouse (DW) systems.
According to the job posting, the specialist “must have experience in PL/SQL coding and debugging, writing applications and developing reports, structured database design and development, data warehouse development and support, Oracle and database knowledge and tools, web development,” and “must have knowledge of ETL tools, data integration, and system development life cycle principals.”
