Departments Seeking Specialists With Technical, Leadership Skills

Requirements for the various positions include expertise in infrastructure and systems engineering, drones and data.

State agencies dealing with housing, technology and water resources are recruiting for senior-level positions.

The California Housing Finance Agency (CalHFA) is recruiting for a senior system engineer (IT Specialist II) for AWS and Azure cloud, providing architectural, engineering, operational and project management support for the agency’s IT systems, which include the server, storage, application, infrastructure and services.

“If you have experience with AWS cloud infrastructure and are interested in working in a dynamic team, this will be a good opportunity for you,” a CalHFA spokesperson told Techwire.

“The IT environment includes production, development, test and disaster recovery systems hosted in multiple sites – both on-prem and in the hybrid cloud – and this position’s duties include the entire system life cycle for IT hardware and software assets,” the job posting says.

According to the duty statement, CalHFA’s IT division implements and maintains systems and IT infrastructure “to improve service to partners and borrowers and keeps CalHFA on the competitive edge of the mortgage industry. IT also works with internal employees to maintain and improve CalHFA’s network of email and Internet services, as well as the many software programs used by other divisions.”

The duty statement outlines the essential functions of the position, which include:

  • Server and cloud administration and support
  • Data integrity and management
  • Windows server, VMware server and EMC storage area network infrastructure
  • Public Records Act and litigation data needs management

In addition, the specialist will assist the help desk and end-user support with escalated issues from the Tier 2 technicians, and will participate in staff meetings, attend training, provide work status reports, handle special projects and perform other job-related duties as assigned.

The position has a monthly salary range of $7,700 to $10,318, and the application deadline is Oct. 25. More information about the position and the requirements for the position, including the IT Specialist II exam, are available in the job posting and the duty statement.

The California Department of Technology is seeking a data engineering architect (IT Specialist III) to serve in the department’s Office of Enterprise Technology. The principal data architect – a “mastery-level position,” according to the job posting – “serves as the lead consultant responsible for defining the next generation of trusted data engineering solutions.”

“Working as part of a fast-paced, agile and innovative team, the IT Spec III works across all areas of OET’s technology stack, enabling critical statewide data services, qualify complex data ELT/ETL, and trailblaze new data engineering solutions for the cloud,” the posting states. The architect makes recommendations to the state chief information officer and executives on data engineering platform standards, data automation opportunities, compliance, and on current and new data technology developments. “The IT Spec III works with external partners and customers on statewide efforts, which include but are not limited to departments’ and agencies’ development teams, vendors and partners to arrive at the most appropriate platform and infrastructure design or integration.”

The architect will report to CDT’s Carlos Isaac Cabrera, who in April was named the state geographic information officer and manager of data and geospatial services. In a LinkedIn post about the recruitment, Cabrera wrote: “We are looking for a Data Engineering Architect to join us! Do you love all things data and dream of being involved in transformative data projects for CA?” His team is working with other state entities on COVID-related initiatives involving data.

The position has a monthly salary range of $8,488 to $11,375, and the application deadline is Oct. 2. More information is available in the duty statement.
