Through the touchscreen kiosks, users can renew their vehicle registration or file Planned Non-Operation Status without waiting in line (or making an appointment) by scanning the barcode on a paper renewal notice. The kiosks accept payments like an ATM.

Users may still renew registration online, by mail or phone.

A year ago DMV asked vendors through an RFI to suggest upgrades that could push more customers toward self-service terminals. The DMV wants future terminals to offer features such as more languages, privacy screens and internal sensors that trigger if the unit has been tampered with.

A 2012 report from the Legislative Analyst’s Office found it cost the state just $3.75 for each renewal processed at a kiosk compared with $14.74 for each transaction handled by a field officer.
