One proposal, a collaborative effort between LIFT-Los Angeles and One Degree, received a grant from the city and will work with First 5 LA to build tools for struggling families, it was announced Wednesday.

LIFT-Los Angeles is one part of a larger nonprofit focused on helping families move out of multi-generational poverty, while First 5 LA works to reinvest LA County’s proceeds from Proposition 10’s tobacco tax. One Degree uses technology and an open portal to catalog public resources on one site.

The three programs are working together to create a scalable solution to assist and educate parents. One part of the solution will be to find out from parents what needs are not being met. These suggestions will be incorporated into a mobile Web tool. The site will combine information and resources with motivational push notifications, according to the grant application.

“One Degree, a technology-driven nonprofit, provides LIFT members with a strong community resource platform that is uniquely user-friendly and accessible. Partnering with One Degree puts LIFT closer to the goal of true empowerment in putting critical information directly into their hands,” the application reads.

The application requested a grant of up to $100,000.
