The Judicial Council of California  has hired Martin N. Hoshino, undersecretary for operations at the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR), as administrative director.

As undersecretary of CDCR,  Hoshino has overseen California’s 34 prisons, a $10 billion budget and 60,000 staff.

"Martin has a distinguished record of public service. He did an outstanding job of helping the state manage its prison system during a very difficult period,” said Governor Jerry Brown in a statement.

The Judicial Council is the policymaking body of the California court system, presided over by the California chief justice.

Last month, the agency approved a new IT governance and strategic plan.  The 283-page document (.pdf download) makes numerous recommendations, such as reorganizing and renaming the existing Court Technology Advisory Committee, setting a matrix of responsibilities and approval processes for various advisory committees and individual courts, and setting criteria for project prioritization.

Hoshino will start in his new position on October 1.
